Behind the design and build of every private pool featuring a Twinscape movable floor is the client’s desire to make the best and most creative use of the space in their home.
Clients paint a picture of how they want to use their space and we make their dream a reality.
This award-winning, majestic-looking swimming pool was built for a family whose dream was to use just one part of their London residence for both swimming and entertaining. And we’re not talking about a traditional pool party; they wanted to use the same space for different functions at different times – swimming for the family, and then to transform the pool area into a party space.
They wanted an effective, easy-to- use and aesthetically pleasing solution.
When most people think of a private pool, typically they imagine space devoted exclusively to that pool, where only swimming takes place. The thought that this same space could also be used as an alternative function wouldn’t occur to them. However, a pool incorporating a Twinscape movable floor is an entirely different matter and allows the homeowner to use the space for different purposes. When the movable floor is activated, it glides gently to the top of the pool and covers the water with a solid base that blends seamlessly with the surrounding floor or outdoor terrace. There is also the safety benefit of the pool being sealed off when the movable floor is raised and secured at level deck.
Twinscape is an innovative company that focuses on the concept, design and custom manufacture of advanced systems for covering and dividing swimming pools and other leisure spaces. Its movable floor system enables swimming pools to be transformed into a multi-purpose area, giving clients the best of both worlds - when lowered, a luxurious pool for full depth swimming and pool games, and when raised to deck level, a solid, secure floor for social gatherings; the closest one can get to walking or dancing on water.
But that’s only half the story. With the ability to control the floor level, the water depth can to be adjusted for specific needs – clients can have a number of pre-set depths from which they can select. Alternatively, a remote control can be used to stop the rising floor at literally any level.
This unique movable floor was installed in the family’s magnificent pool, providing them with maximum flexibility for swimming and entertaining. The pool was designed and built by London Swimming Pool Company (LSPC), which was commissioned by the architect/main contractor, Janine Stone, to manage the project. LSPC created the 15.8m x 3.2m metre classic design with two magnificent Roman ends. Large format porcelain tiles were specially fabricated down to 20mm x 20mm to achieve a perfect finish on the Roman ends. The steps are centred on the right side of the pool and cast into the pool wall to ensure that the moving floor glides smoothly over them.
Working alongside LSPC, Twinscape installed the movable floor system which comprises a floating stainless steel structure pulled down via cables and a pulley system by means of a water based hydraulic ram. This system is both hidden and safe. Integrated under the structure of the pool are buoyancy packs that allow its natural position to float on the water.
Once deck level is reached, the structure locks into the pool shell walls, increasing the maximum load supported by the structure.
Jamie Smith, Managing Director, at LSPC said, “We have been designing pools with Twinscape movable floors for a couple of years. The company provides first-class technical and installation support for its system. The movable floor technology has expanded our horizons, enabling us to offer clients greater choice, especially in where they locate their pools. For example, where space is an issue, they no longer have to compromise; they can still have a luxury pool and switch back to normal room or garden when they wish. And the movable floor solves the ‘iceberg’ home phenomenon – instead digging deep into the garden to create extra space, they can use existing space in the home and simply make it dual-purpose.”
In addition to the movable floor, this client’s pool features two Hugo Lahme massage stations which are recessed, as are the Wibre 3 x 3 watt LED lights, avoiding any protrusion from the wall structure. The pool walls are finished with 600mm x 600mm elegant cream coloured porcelain tiles and the same large format porcelain tiles were used for the pool surround creating a light and seamless feel to the 75 square metre pool hall.
The air handling system, which controls the temperature in the pool hall, is linked to the movable floor allowing the heating to set back the temperature when the pool cover is fully raised, conserving energy. The pool also has a chilling mode which drops the air temperature to 20 degrees, creating a lovely cool ambience for guests.
The family not only has a beautiful swimming pool, but a space where they can entertain up to 60 guests in a cool, comfortable environment.
Located on the magical Kiawah Island in South Carolina, this stunning outdoor swimming pool was the ‘brainchild’ of several minds – the family who owns the pool, the architects, contractor, pool designer, interior designer and Twinscape.

This was not the first swimming pool the client had having previously installed one at another of his homes and this house did already have a pool but it needed renovating. The architect suggested they rebuild the whole pool to incorporate a movable floor and make the area into a flexible entertainment space.
